The crazy thing is I only very recently discovered Dyke And The Blazers. I remember hearing the "Some people don't like the way Sally walk" bit in the Stetsasonic song called "Sally" back in 1988 and never knew it came from the original sound of Dyke. I'm pretty sure I first heard Dyke's version on a blog mix and it was like BLAMMO! After all these years, that's where that sample came from? Of course I went on a mission to find any and all Dyke records and was just amazed at the massive amounts of FUNK...

originally released in 1975 this album features soulful jazz grooves played by lyman woodard, who began his career playing the piano but switched to organ after hearing jimmy smith, plus norma bell (alt sax), lorenzo brown (percussion), ron english (electric guitar, bass), leonard king (drums, vocals), charles moore (triangle) and bud spangler (percussion)

Back in the mid-eighties, Guralnick's "Sweet Soul Music" had just come out, and I read it like it was the Bible or something. Right around the same time, Rounder released "Soul Alive", and Solomon Burke became my new hero. I went to see him whenever he came to New York, and he never failed to just knock me out.
There was a woman who sold any number of things from a cafeteria table set up on 7th Avenue, right in the middle of everything. Sometimes, among all the clutter, would be a pile of 45s...

The Harder They Come (1972) - Island
Picking one record out of all the timeless ones is pretty close to mission impossible. It becomes more a question of which is the one record which means the most to you, helped you get over heart-break, awkwardness of your teenage years and so on... I'll start with the runner-up: listening to A Tribe Called Quest's "Low End Theory" (cassette of course) as a 13 year old pretty much defined what musical path I would take after. So, that's definetly my teenage years defining record.

this seems to be ann bridgeforth's only release, although an acetate was discovered in the early 90's and so the song was later released on ace records after they bought the rights to dave hamilton's recordings
unfortunately ann died in 2003 due to kidney failure
