NEWS

NPR’s All Things Considered recently featured Latin Jazz harpist Edmar Castaneda in an article that includes both audio and a written interview. There’s some interesting information about Castaneda’s initial love for the harp, his immersion in jazz and American music, and some background on his trio. You can stream the audio interview with Castaneda as well as a live recording of his trio performing with jazz vibraphonist Joe Locke. There’s also some preview tracks from Castaneda’s new ArtistShare release – due on May 1, 2009, Entre Cuerdas includes all the inspiring extras that accompany an ArtistShare project. You can check out the NPR article HERE and Castaneda’s ArtistShare page HERE.

Cachaça, the New York hotspot for jazz and Brazilian music, recently felt the heavy effects of the sour U.S. economy and had to shut their doors after almost two years of service to the city’s Latin Jazz community. It’s a sad reality check when jazz clubs close their doors, a story that we hear all too often. This one hits home especially hard, as the club served a wide range of artists from the established Latin Jazz community to the up and comers finding their voice. Jazz.com contributor Eugene Marlow comments upon “the demise of Cachaça” and the effects of the current economy upon the jazz world – check it out HERE.

We should learn from Cachaça’s story – even in these tough economic times, it’s important to support venues that host live Latin Jazz, and there’s a fantastic new club opening in New York – Tutuma Social Club. Located at 164 East 56th Street in New York, the club will feature Afro-Peruvian food and nightly Afro-Peruvian Jazz with no cover and no drink minimum. Club owner Santina Bari Matwey has tapped trumpeter Gabriel Alegria as the club’s artistic consultant, and the future looks good – performers currently scheduled to appear include vocalists Sofia Rei Koutsovitis and Pilar de la Hoz, trumpeter Ingrid Jensen, pianist Andy Milne, and more. It sounds like an incredible spot – Tutuma Social Club opens on Tuesday, April 28, 2009; you can check out their website HERE. Go out and support live Latin Jazz!
