RIBS: The “Accidental” Double Triple…
Filed under: Music, Playlists, RIBS, Soul/R&B, SoulTrackin', radio.blog
The Triple Play Thurs-Day mix is now out of the oven, on the buffet table and ready for your consumption. Although I really didn’t plan on it when I started, this week’s mix turned out to be a “Double Triple”, two full playlists of sweet, soul music by two classic soul groups and one of the most beautiful (both physically and vocally) divas of her era that, unfortunately, met a tragic end at too young of an age. Our featured trio this week:
- The Stylistics
- The Main Ingredient
- Phyllis Hyman

Prince’s New Single at Honey Soul Music…
Honey Soul Music has just posted a download of the new single, “Guitar” from Prince’s forthcoming release, “Planet Earth” (in stores July 24). It’s a funky, rock-ish groove with Prince absolutely workin’ out on the guitar. Reminds me a a great summer driving song; top down, engine humming, open road and not a cop in sight! Go check it out…

TG Notes: I just LOVE finding good, new “soulsites” and sharing them with you. This time, the tables were turned and the site found me instead {smile}.
JOURNEYintoSOUL.net (what a great name!) is a very good looking site that I’m sure we’ll all enjoy. For example, check out the very well done initial podcast, JOURNEY into SOUL – Show One, which features independent artist Ian Martin, and a number of other enjoyably soulful tunes by some new and/or independent artists. This site’s a “keeper” and already has a place in my regular, “must-check-it-out-at-least-once-a-week” rotation.
JOURNEYintoSOUL is an idea that Thomas Baltazar (aka DJ urban unrest) and Edward Uken came up with one sunny Sunday morning while sitting on a park bench. Ed is a musician, having played saxophone and piano for about ten years. Tom is a DJ with great ties to the local soul scene with a marketing background. We decided to put together a podcast that shared our love for music, and set out to find unsigned artists that produce positive, uplifting, SOULfull music, and help share our discoveries with others.

TG Notes: IDR just couldn’t fight it any longer {smile} and is jumping on the podcast/mix bandwagon. Considering the quality and diversity of the music posts Colin has been gracing us with, this is a very welcome event indeed! I for one am looking forward to what we’ll be seeing in the weeks ahead!
A few people have asked me why I hadn’t posted some longer mixes rather than individual tracks. There was no particular reason why I hadn’t so I have now made my first.
I’ve Been “Memed”…
Well, this is certainly one of those, “I’ve Arrived!” moments… the first time someone has sent me a web meme. Hats off to my friend RK over at The Brown Spoon for hittin’ me up. He must have known that I wouldn’t be able to resist the subject of this one!
It took some time and there were a number of different ways I could have gone with it, but in the end I felt there was only one group that could give me just the right answers:
Pick a band and answer only using song titles: Parliament/Funkadelic
Are you male or female: Uncle Jam
Describe yourself: Colour Me Funky
Your best piece of advice: Free Your Mind And Your Ass Will Follow
Describe your last relationship: Supergroovalisticprosifunkstication
Describe your last crush: Super Stupid
Say something to someone you have a crush on: Let’s Take It To The Stage
Say something to an ex: All Your Goodies Are Gone
Say something to someone who hurt you severely: Take Your Dead Ass Home
How do you feel right now: Standing On The Verge Of Getting It On
Cool! Now to throw this one over to a few musical minds to see what they can come up with… EJ (EJFlavors), GL (SOULcrates), Kev (Got The Fever) and BWM (Buffalo West Music). Catch!

All That Jazz: In Celebration of Jazz Appreciation Month
I don’t talk about my love for jazz enough on this blog so I figure jazz appreciation month is the perfect time to do so. I have to admit that my knowledge is lacking. Mama Vivrant Thang was never really into jazz so it wasn’t played much around the house. She did love Kenny G though and [...]
The “Boys” Are Back In Town…
Remember the Four Brothers Beats blog? Well, the boys are back! BUT... not quite in the way you may have been expecting. It's, how shall we say, "the same, but different!"

Fusion: Where Music, Technology, and Artist Creativity Intersect
Hello readers and listeners. I trust all is well today. This post is a follow-up to the previous post about the subject of an upcoming podcast I hope to resurrect entitled Fusion. The concept of this podcast came to me via an off the cuff discussion I had a few years ago with a fellow podcaster/recording artist/graphic designer. Both of us, being musicians in our own right, began discussing our backgrounds and influences in making music, which invariably talking about how technology (past and present) played a role taking the music from inner to outer. I began to see the different paths ...
