SoulTrackin’ 04/30/07… End of Month Review
It’s been awhile since I actually sat down and wrote a “SoulTrackin” post here but there is a good reason, which I’ll explain in a bit.
April has been a very good month as far as the site is concerned and I thought this would be a good time (end of the month and 1/3 of the way through the year) to take a look back and review some of the happenings here at NetInfoWeb and give a shout out to many of my favorite SoulSites, old and new.
First, a few words (I’ll try not to write a novel here {smile}) about this family of websites (RIBS and the SoulSites Aggregator page being the other two). The most important thing I want to say is:
“THANK YOU!”
I have heard from quite a few people over the past couple of months (especially the last couple of weeks) via comments and/or email stating how much they like what I’m doing here. I can’t express in words how much this positive feedback warms my heart and makes my day. Additionally, some of you have even thought enough of this place to add it to your blogroll on your site. I smile from ear-to-ear all day long when that happens. A double “Thank You!” for the ‘LinkLove’ as I like to call it.
I’d also like to express my appreciation to all of the blog/website authors who write about and share their passion for soul music (in all of its forms). Without you guys and gals this place couldn’t really exist… there’d be no SoulSites for me to search for, discover and promote! {smile} So, if you have a soul music site, keep on doing what you’re doing over there so I can keep on doing what I’m doing over here. If I’ve found you, I’ll talk about ya. If I haven’t found you yet, well… I’m lookin’ for ya! {smile}
Also, in the continuing evolution of this place, April saw the debut of NetInfoWeb’s SoulSites Aggregator page, something I have been wanting to put together for a long time. The SA page displays the latest headlines of 50 “soul music” sites in one nice convenient place, thus making it extremely easy to keep up to date with all of the music information that the sites publish. As a matter of fact, that’s why I don’t write these longer “SoulTrackin” posts as frequently as I originally began doing, it’s easier to track the sites with the SA page. BTW, there are so many good sites out there that I may just have to create a SoulSites Aggregator 2 page. Keep checking back for an announcement.
And last, but far from the least, the kitchen continues to operate on overtime as I prepare my weekly musical morsels, the Triple Play Thurs-Day mix, over on the mp3blog Rhythms In Black Satin.
Now, what about many of those great SoulSites?
Well first, to steal a phrase from Hollywood, I think “A Star Is Born”. I have become hooked on a relatively new soul music blog called Fufu Stew (you just know that I’m gonna love a music site that uses food references, right? {smile}). Chief Chef Vincent “be cookin’ up a storm” (as mama used to say) providing interesting and entertaining information about that sweet, soul music. And if that ain’t enough, download some of the music mixes that he creates. The only thing else I can think of to say as you try to push yourself away from his buffet table is: “Would you like a side of RIBS with that?” {BIG smile}

My dog, or some other being I have absolutely no control over, has apparently eaten that “official” post I made reference to last time. It doesn’t even matter that I don’t have a dog…or a post—I’m sticking to that as my pathetic excuse.

The Prestige posts keep rollin’ on with another banger from Charles Earland recorded in 1971. Motown 67 had this to say about it at Soul Strut: Charles Earland and his band of players including Houston Person and Maynard Parker jump start things with the rousing funk-jazz of Betty’s Dilemma with some pounding drums by Jesse Kilpatrick who lets loose with a long LOOOOONG drum break as well. Earland changes pace with the next song, Love Story with its moody beginning before going into a little vamp, probably the only version of this song I’ve ever actually liked. On the second side Earland returns to his more traditional, swinging soul-jazz with One For Scotty. The band also does a decent cover of Stevie. Wonder’s I Was Made To Love Her. Probably one of Earland’s best albums.

ThisIsRealMusic.com (T.I.R.M.) was created by a small team of music lovers with one goal in mind: to provide a space on the Internet for other music lovers to learn about, listen to and support true artists. We understand that these artists don’t always get the best marketing, but you will find them here, as well as the more popular artists that we’ve grown to appreciate for their consistent excellence.

There are many artists I wish I had seen before they passed: Grant Green, Miles Davis, Bob Marley, and my list could go on and on. However, out of all those artists, the one I think about the most is one Eunice Waymon, aka Nina Simone…

Another anniversary release, this time for the legendary Stax label. There’s no shortage on Stax compilations (I’ve had a few up before, which I can’t replace atm) and you probably have a lots of tunes on this set on other CDs too (tracklist). It doesn’t hurt that much since these songs are classics, both timeless and era-defining. You need to be aware of other Stax-collections because there is a lovely 9CD box set with all the singles and a 4 CD set called ‘The Stax story’, for example.

Funky16Corners Radio v21 Mix…

It’s always a treat when Funky16Corners posts a new mix, and this is no exception!
…as the Funky16Corners fam is about to hit the road for some well deserved R&R – I have concocted a new mix, a la Funky16Corners Radio pour vous, so that while I am away from the interwebs, and consuming lobster at what might be described as an “alarming rate” , you have some sweet sounds to soothe you.

I’m going to try something a little different in this post. Instead of doing a normal write-up, I’m going to attempt to transcribe the lyrics (if we can accurately refer to what James and Co. are doing here as ‘lyrics’) to the uncut version of James Brown’s “Escape-ism.” Why? As I was surfing the net looking for information on this release, I kept coming across people writing about James’ “nonsensical rambling” and “random gibberish” and “undecipherable accent” and so on. One reviewer even said (to paraphrase), “You can’t understand much of what James says on this record, but then, it doesn’t really matter anyway.”

The fabulous Mizell Brothers on the case for Flautist Roger Glenn on the Fantasy label from 1976. Probably the least well known of the Mizell Bros productions this one has a great line up-Mark Soskin,Paul Jackson,BillSummers,Ray Obiedo,Pete Escovedo with the wonderfuly named Gaylord Birch on drums.

Blue Note, Prestige, Riverside Records (hard bop’s big three labels); bebop, cool/west coast, hard bop/mode, free jazz musicians; Miles Davis’ personal connections, and more.

I’m still working on my next “official” post, but I thought the time might pass more quickly if you could hear some great music during the intermission. All of these songs are original recordings that have been sampled on hip-hop joints. The selection is fairly eclectic in terms of genre, but they do share one thing in common—excellence.

I have a lot of musical heroes, but two stand out: Sly Stone and Serge Gainsbourg. Come to think of it, the acidfunkgod and the poète maudit have a lot of things in common: they stretched musical boundaries, they worked with black and white musicians, they had a knack for beautiful women and dangerous drugs and they liked to make a fool of themselves. And they keep on inspiring musicians nowadays. Sly’s seven Epic-albums are reissued, with great liner notes (by writers like Touré, Greg Tate and Joel Selvin) and bonus tracks.
Parliament/Funkadelic 2007 Tour Dates…

This article is based upon the remarkable research of the Soulpool website, conducted by Steve Higginson , David Pendleton and others. Basically, Soulpool is creating a detailed social and cultural history of the musical roots of Liverpool. Liverpool’s black history, of course, is a long one. Both free and unfree, black people have been living in Liverpool for 400 years. As Britain’s principal slave-trading port for over a century, it surpassed Bristol and London.

I don’t talk about my love for jazz enough on this blog so I figure jazz appreciation month is the perfect time to do so. I have to admit that my knowledge is lacking. Mama Vivrant Thang was never really into jazz so it wasn’t played much around the house. She did love Kenny G though and [...]

Fusion: Where Music, Technology, and Artist Creativity Intersect
Hello readers and listeners. I trust all is well today. This post is a follow-up to the previous post about the subject of an upcoming podcast I hope to resurrect entitled Fusion. The concept of this podcast came to me via an off the cuff discussion I had a few years ago with a fellow podcaster/recording artist/graphic designer. Both of us, being musicians in our own right, began discussing our backgrounds and influences in making music, which invariably talking about how technology (past and present) played a role taking the music from inner to outer. I began to see the different paths ...
