SoulTrackin’ 07-31-06…
Let’s see what happened on some of the various SoulSites this past week…
AK over at Soul Shower has a guest post from one of his readers, Kevin, who waxes poetic about a couple of hits from 1971: “If I were Your Woman” by Gladys Knight and the Pips, and “Have You Seen Her” by the Chi-Lites.
If you are in the Detroit area Soul Divas says you should be kickin’ yourself if you missed Fertile Ground live in concert on Saturday night.
Norvell posted Show #38 over at The Jazz Suite.
EJ. OSW: To The Sun, Volume 7. ‘Nuff said. {smile}
Dan over at Home of the Groove took some time off from the blog this past week, but before he left he treated us to a little background on the Neville Brothers and their second album, “Fiyo On The Bayou”.
From Funking In The 80s a little background and video on a group I’ve been playing a lot lately: Midnight Star.
Several posts over on Orgy In Rhythm (man, I just LOVE that name!) about jazzman Don Ellis. Who? Remember (if you are old enough) a little, small movie called, “The French Connection”? Don Ellis did the film score/soundtrack.
Honey at Honeysoul.com is back from her vacation last week. She drops some info about three new SOLAR Records Anniversary Edition releases: Shalamar, Midnight Star and Lakeside.
On the “B” side a look at Benny Spellman and his collaborations with Allen Toussaint.
Whew! The Stepfather of Soul has been busy this week. Posts about Warren Lee, Don Covay, Carla Thomas, Hank Ballard and Major Lance. Go on boy, do yo thang!
Likewise, Caesar Tjalbo, kept the musical vibes flowing with info about The Shadows, Bettye LaVette, Ike Turner’s Kings of Rhythm (pre-Tina), the “Soul: You Better Believe It!” (volumes 1 & 2) compilations from Atlantic/ATCO, and Fontella Bass.
Rob Whatman at Brown Eyed Handsome Man treats us to some info about southern soul man Billy Young.
New evidence has turned up in Case Three: J. Hines over at Soul Detective.
Kenny over at Rap Underground North is getting some things started. He’s a partner of mine. Check ‘em out.
And finally, we wrap up this edition of SoulTrackin’ with a pointer to Funky16Corners as he looks at The Four Tops, and Jeanne & The Darlings (produced by Isaac Hayes and David Porter).
Oh, almost forgot. Some guy who thinks he’s got some mad dj skills has a new site he calls “RIBS” (where did he get *that* name from?!) He’s posted his first mix called, New York Groove. {sigh} Wonder how long this will last? Oh well, you might want to check it out if you have nothing else to do…

ATLANTA —The Soul Lounge and Groovenation pioneers in the soul music industry, announce its first International Soul Music Summit. The fight to keep the vibe alive kicks off August 11-12, 2006 at the Marriott Atlanta Downtown. Soul lovers from around the world are invited to take part in this groundbreaking conference, which will address the urgency of continuing to promote soul, filled music in an entertainment industry dominated by commercial music.
Soul music has entered a state of emergency. As a result, the genres’ top musicians, producers, executives, promoters, dj’s and connoisseurs of the good vibrations of real music has brought to us all for decades, will have a two-day meeting of the minds in Atlanta, GA Jason Orr, Founder of FunkJazz Kafe, soul artists Jaguar Wright, Martin Luther, Eric Roberson, Algebra, and Javier. Songwriter and musicologist Gordon Chambers, DJ Jamad representing Afromentals/ Sirius Radio, emerging talent Peven Everett, Carlton Hargro, host of Audiofloss Creative Loafing and more will convene for this invaluable session on the progression of soul music into the digital age.
In addition, the summit is pleased to announce the participation of industry insiders such as Bryant Johnson, producer for BET’s Soul Sessions, Barry King of Solar Radio (UK), Deborah Hinds of Soul Talk, John Dean of Solar Radio and The Juice London, Kembo Tom of GTM…It Means A lot, Anthony David, Fiona Bloom of the Bloom Effect and DJ Salah Ananse. Making her Atlanta-debut at the summit is songwriter turned filmmaker, Stephanie Renee unveiling her latest documentary film, “NO SUCH THING AS NEOSOUL”.
Discussions and workshops will begin at 10:00am each day with registration starting at 800am. The discussions will feature a think tank of soul music lovers and providers including Terry Bello, Soul Music Summit GM and founder of The Soul Lounge. Once thought to be primarily an “underground” genre of music, (Neo) Soul has emerged as a strong brand that reaches across traditional ethnic and economic backgrounds. This unprecedented event is a can’t miss for anyone who loves or is a part of this musical movement. Panels are designed to enrich you with information to ignite your career, hone your craft and ultimately save our souls.
”This is a professional conference – about business…the music business. We want attendees to walk away feeling that the mood/vibe was good, the connections were right and there was always soul music going on”, says Terry Bello, Soul Music Summit GM. “It’s about mixing, mingling, connecting and networking so they get ‘hooked up’ and come away with valuable money making connections they did not have before they came. Now is the time to highlight (increase awareness) and recognize (support) this genre of music as it creates an urban vibe that is a life style that expands across the globe and is poised to positively impact the world!”
Those who wish to register online can do so at www.soulsummitonline.com. Serving host to our inaugural soul extravaganza is The Marriott Atlanta Downtown, (formerly the Wyndham), located within walking distance to many Atlanta attractions including Centennial Park, The Georgia Aquarium, Underground Atlanta and the historic Auburn Avenue. As a result, Soul Music Summit participants will receive a special host room rate of $99 per night for double occupancy.

Wish I Could Design Like That…
Wow! Todd Kelley over at ToddKelley.net has a bangin’ new site design. Words can’t even do it justice, just go over there and check it out.
Like I said, “Boy, I wish I could design a website like that!”
It’s Wednesday…
…and you know what that means. Another “Old School Wednesday” mix from EJ Flavors! Go check out his latest: OSW: To The Sun, Volume 7 .
SoulTrackin’ 07-24-06…
While I’m still researching different soul music websites (sites I refer to as “SoulSites”) and trying to come up with a format/formula for the site reviews I’ll be posting here, let me introduce another feature you will find here on NetInfoWeb: “SoulTrackin’”.
The SoulTrackin’ messages posts are going to be a regular look back at the recent happenings on various SoulSites; sort of an overall snapshot of many of the more interesting (IMHO) message and/or music postings, just in case you missed something. The plan is for these to come out on a more or less weekly basis on Mondays (maybe Saturday night, maybe Sunday, we’ll see how it all works out) as a recap of the past week. For this first effort though, some of the items I note here may be more than a week old…
From my favorite SoulSite these days, EJ Flavors, the latest “Old School Wednesday” podcast/mix, OSW: Postscript. It’s just not Wednesday without a new OSW mix to listen to.
GrantLove (aka SOULcrates) treats us to “A Jazzy Feel” mix with his latest effort. Also, I would be remiss if I didn’t point out his list of “Top 50 All Time Wedding/Love Ballads”, not to mention his newest effort, Raps Roots, which chronicles the classic, early days of the hip-hop/rap music culture.
AK over at Soul Shower has Frankie Beverly’s, “While I’m Alone”, stuck in his head. Not the version you probably are familiar with though, this one is from one of Frankie’s earlier groups, Raw Soul.
KB (the originator of “Old School Wednesday”), teamed up with EJ to give us “the day after Independence Day” mix, OSW: The Fifth of July.
The Jazz Suite, Show #37. Another beautiful, melodic mix of indie jazz by Norvell. Highly recommended!
In Dangerous Rhythm gives us the lowdown on the new CD, Memphisapolis, by Willie Walker and the Butanes.LondonLee treats us to one of the many (11?!) versions of Gett Off by Prince.
Irving (Irv) Green and Dinah Washington on the “B” Side.
After a week of trying to stay cool (from the oppressive heat) and focusing on ballads, Funky16Corners turns up his own heat and drops the “Funky Shing-A-Ling” MP3 mix on us.
Soul Sides is moving (physically, IRL [in real life], from S.F. to L.A.). If you’re on the left coast and in the area drop by his“O-Dub Send-Off” party on Saturday, July 28th (it’s free!).
Honey over at HoneySoul (another of my favorite, not-to-be-missed SoulSites) let’s us know about a contest to design the cover of Janet Jackson’s upcoming release; previews of new music by Pharell, David Benoit and Feist, plus video previews by Sleepy Browne and Lil Wayne; and a new Soul 2 Soul podcast featuring new music from John Legend, Robin Thicke, Jay Dee, Lupe Fiasco, The Roots and more.

Rebirth, part 2…
“Tracking the Sites, Tracking the SOUL!”
…is the new byline for this site. As I talked about in the previous post, the focus for this site has changed. Instead of concentrating on the intersection of computers, technology and business, NetInfoWeb is now focused on information about and relating to music, specifically Soul Music.
Of course, just like any journey, once you know where you are headed you still have to figure out how to get there. This is the “how”: discovering and reviewing the websites and blogs that are covering the soul music scene, both past and present.
In some ways the decision to adopt this niche for the site is purely selfish, I have spent a lot of long hours searching the ‘Net for good sites that have quality information about yesterday and today’s Soul music scene. There are many sites out there that were subsequently found, but I kept having this nagging thought: “this would be a lot easier if there was one site I could go to that could point me to the top Soul/R&B/Funk sites on the ‘Net”. I mean, you see all kinds of places that track the sites and/or services for “Web 2.0″ and just about any other topic that you can think of. But, as of yet, I have not seen a site dedicated to the tracking, reviewing and promoting of other websites/blogs whose primary subject is Soul music.
NetInfoweb aspires to be just such a site.
Well, that’s two steps covered so far. We now know where we’re going and, the plan for how we’re gonna get there. Next time out let’s take a look at some of the sites that I’ve found and see about developing a format for reviewing what they have to offer.
Rebirth…
Hmmm… almost 4 months without a post here. Well, once again, my plans to maintain this place on a regular basis have not come to pass. Too many outside distractions and not enough time (oh, for day between Saturday & Sunday! {smile}).
Undaunted, here I go again… REBIRTH!
This blog, NetInfoWeb.com, is slowly going to come back to life over the next several weeks in a new guise and with a different focus. Anyone who has tried his/her hand at blogging knows that starting a blog is easy, very easy these days with the great tools we now have. I should know, I’ve started (and eventually dropped) a dozen or more of them over the years. The hard part is maintaining it over the long haul on a regular (daily, weekly or whatever) basis with new content.
The key, of course, is to find something you are interested in and/or passionate about that you will enjoy researching and writing about. Most of the blogs I have started had something to do with computers and technology (which is a strong interest of mine) but, as it turns out, not a topic that sustains my long term interest when it comes to blogging. For weeks I have been wrestling with that common blogger’s dilemma: what to blog about… what to blog about… Hmmmm…. MUSIC!
Yes, music. Specifically Soul Music.
As it turns out one of the things I’ve been overlooking in all of my previous attempts at blogging has been my interest in and passion for music. It actually predates my passion for computers and technology. Fortunately, these two interests (music & computers) are very complementary to each other, today’s computer technology makes it so much easier and enjoyable to research, explore, make and mix music.
Anyway, there’s the first step. NetInfoWeb now has it’s new focus: Music. Now, exactly what form that will take and how I go about is the next step. More on that in the next posting. (and no, it won’t take another 4 months… I hope {smile})
All That Jazz: In Celebration of Jazz Appreciation Month
I don’t talk about my love for jazz enough on this blog so I figure jazz appreciation month is the perfect time to do so. I have to admit that my knowledge is lacking. Mama Vivrant Thang was never really into jazz so it wasn’t played much around the house. She did love Kenny G though and [...]
The “Boys” Are Back In Town…
Remember the Four Brothers Beats blog? Well, the boys are back! BUT... not quite in the way you may have been expecting. It's, how shall we say, "the same, but different!"

Fusion: Where Music, Technology, and Artist Creativity Intersect
Hello readers and listeners. I trust all is well today. This post is a follow-up to the previous post about the subject of an upcoming podcast I hope to resurrect entitled Fusion. The concept of this podcast came to me via an off the cuff discussion I had a few years ago with a fellow podcaster/recording artist/graphic designer. Both of us, being musicians in our own right, began discussing our backgrounds and influences in making music, which invariably talking about how technology (past and present) played a role taking the music from inner to outer. I began to see the different paths ...
